My name is Moulaye Niang, also known as Muranero. I took this name from the jokes they used to make me during the Glass school, calling me the “Muranero” from “Murano” and “nero” (black in italian).

Moulaye Niang - Glassmaker

Both my parents were craftsmen and merchants, my father worked with gold, while my mother worked and created with fabrics and jewels.

Muranero’s activity started twenty years ago in the Castello district of Venice, in a small shop behind Campo Bragora. In the laboratory the glass is worked with a torch to create fill and blown pearls, modelling them with the lampworking technique.

I chose to follow my passion for beads by dedicating my entire activity to them: beads in Africa are everywhere and the jewels that I create with my wife Alice are the result of the encounter between my African roots, my European background and the magical atmosphere of Venice. My main source of inspiration is people, their stories.

Creating means going beyond your limits, discovering the other and the world. I let myself be guided by the light of the day, by a sound. The most beautiful bead I have created, however, I created it thinking of an African sunset that I had in my memory. And I gave it to my sister.

I like to call myself a glass craftsman, because in our atelier everything is handmade and each piece is unique.
